How Counselling Works

Counselling is a formal therapy session facilitated by a professional counsellor where an individual is given the venue to talk about his thoughts and feelings. It based on a special yet professional relationship between a client and a counsellor where it aims to empower the client.  It helps them deal with what’s troubling them and come up with a resolution on how to handle these troubles.  But, a lot of people often wonder how counselling works.  Here is the process:

Acknowledgement

If you recently behave unlike yourself and you are bothered by something that you are already losing sleep over it, then it is probably time to talk to someone, preferably a professional counsellor.  But before choosing the best therapist for you, you need to do the following first:

Identifying the Problem

This first step is definitely where it will all start.  You have to identify the problem first.   There are some people who would rather deny that they are experiencing some stress or panic attacks and would just go on with their lives.  But they don’t know is that anxiety will tend to grow day by day once left untreated.  That’s why it is important that you acknowledge this by yourself and accept it as a fact.

Acknowledging that You Need Help

Acknowledging the problem is one thing.  Acknowledging that you need help from another person that you do not know is another thing.  Because of pride, some people are embarrassed to ask for help.  They don’t want to be tagged as a loser or a psychopath who needs to have counselling. This should not be the case.  You will never know how great it feels to unleash all your burdens by simply talking to someone like a licensed counsellor.  They will know how to deal with and they will be asking all the right questions.  What’s better is that they won’t judge you for all your troubles.

Choosing a Local Counsellor

There are a lot of available counsellors who offer counselling services in Kerry.  However, it is important to choose the right counsellor that will suit your needs. Here are some tips on choosing the perfect counsellor for you:

Search Online

The Internet is a great source of information.  With just a click of a button, you will be able to gain access to millions of data that are free for the taking.  Listing websites and forums often offer thorough list of counsellors that are available in your area.  All you have to do is make sure that they are indeed legit and are not scammers.

Ask Your Friends/Family

Your friends and family are also often great sources of data.  They would probably know someone who is discreet and credible enough that they can recommend to you.  However, some people are not comfortable letting the loved ones know that they are going to undergo counselling.

Check Their Reputation

Once you have created a list, make sure to double check and confirm that the information that you have collected is true.

Schedule A Meet-up

After checking their profiles, make sure to schedule a visit with the counsellors that’s included in your shortlist.  This will let you assess their personality and see if you are comfortable with them.  It doesn’t matter if you are meeting the best counsellor in town, if you are not comfortable with him or her, then don’t proceed.

The Counselling Process

Counselling is a process with two primary participants, the client and the counselor.  It is a relationship where the client talks and the counsellor listens.   The counsellor might ask questions every now and then to help the client understand more his struggle and reflect on it.  They know what questions to ask in order to the client to realize what he should do or should not do. The counsellor doesn’t decide what the client should do.  The client must decide and come to this realization on his own.
